To date, we’ve been using the now discontinued KATO clay (insert sad face!) our mixing colours were the three Kato primaries: Blue, Magenta and Yellow. Bless Donna Kato for making the range like this. We actually found that if we made what we called Mixing Blue (a 1:1 mix of blue and turquoise) and Mixing Yellow (Yellow with white…can’t remember the proportions but the Samunnat girls know!) our mixing was easier. Then, as well as Black and White, we also used Donna’s secondary colours: Green, Ultra Blue and Red. In addition, we used Orange, Brown, Purple, Pearl, Gold, Copper and Silver. Every colour we mixed was made with combinations of two or more of our 15 core colours. Unfortunately, the good mixing colours are not all available in larger packets which is hugely frustrating for me, not to mention expensive. I wish Turquoise from Number One was available in a 250g or, better still, 500g packet. Currently, only black and white are available in the 500g blocks. And I even more fervently wish that there was a good primary magenta in the Number One in 250g blocks. I get distracted and easily lose track of the number of parts I have used so over time I have developed a technique to minimise my own confusion!!! I sheet out the colours I am using to create my new colour, all at the same thickness. The cutter I use to measure my parts varies. If I think that there are only a few colours involved, I will use a larger cutter (bigger parts) than if I have many colours. BUT I am generally only mixing enough to make a sample tile to start with. I don’t need buckets of the wrong colour!!! So, for example, with my ecru colour, which I knew would have a lot of white (55 parts as it turned out!!) I keep the sheet with all the empty holes as this helps me keep track of what I have used. If I need more, I DO NOT JUST RE-SHEET THE LEFT OVER COLOUR!!! I cut and condition more; and sheet that to keep track of numbers. AND I write things down on the way. I make a note of what thickness I have used in case I forget. Because sometimes I do and that would mean my parts were different!! You may have a much younger, sharper brain and not need to do this but can I just say, it is VERY easy to forget when you are adding a few colours at a time or taking a long time to gradually change a colour. This was reasonable given that reaching a destination on the bus you started with was not a foregone conclusion! You’d only pay the driver for getting you as far as they did. A friend who looked at a photo of our flat commented that it was a dump. As Mal said, But it was our dump and we loved it. The road also continues beyond Chatara to the temple and that was our destination. Motorable might be a generous use of the word to describe the road beyond Chatara but it was fine. And we could not have done the long walk we used to do to get here! It’s a beautiful temple complex in a really serene place with statues dating back to the 5th C. Pilgrims from all over Nepal and India come to visit and some try to lift a stone which it is said can only be lifted by the virtuous. Obviously we didn’t try and based on my observations of the lifting attempts, men are more virtuous. Milk and sugar is boiled and stirred in giant woks until it reduces to create the paste that forms the basis of many Nepali sweets. It an be mixed with Cardamon and pistachio or eaten, as we all did when we got home, with beaten rice. And now it’s now. Dust has been washed off and it’s back to work tomorrow. This is Nepali breakfast. Then, at around 9, I eat dal bhat, Nepali lunch. Dal bhat is a truly fabulous meal and generally consists of rice, lentil sauce (various kinds) veggies, achar (pickles), egg, sometimes yoghurt and salad. And the glorious pink drink you see in the photo is beetroot and carrot juice. Traditionally, Nepalis eat with their hand and over the years this has become automatic and easy but is not what I do at home. Much. At the office, I’ll have some fruit and nuts and then I’ll have some spicy soup or beans in the evening. We rely on the wonderful Karen Rhodes of Clay Alley who, for many years, has supplied our clay and a million and one other things that we get delivered to her place for her to send to us. The consequence of trying to keep all the things in case I used them one day was that I could only fit one table in for teaching. It came down to what gave me most joy…but not in a Marie Kondo way! This was more important than keeping something just in case. And being frustrated when I inevitably couldn’t. Ironically, I actually like limitations when I am creating. Limit my materials or give me something to make jewellery to match and I’m in heaven. Suddenly the range of choices is reduced, I make some decisions and off I go. We explored the impact of form and using contrast as a design element and everyone loved the sculptural quality of these earrings. Not all of the women have had the opportunity for much education, and even those who have, have had very little exposure to ANY kind of teaching about art or design. Art, if taught at all in schools, is colouring in or copying and only happens at the lower class levels. The language around colour and design is limited and there are the cultural issues to take into account too. Artisans are revered for faithfully and skilfully duplicating traditional designs rather than innovation. I wrote a little about this here. I have mentioned before about the (WONDERFUL!!!) Zoom sessions with Kathleen Dustin and Christine Dumont where we are learning and applying the theory and practice of design elements and principals. We also have continuing education about colour theory and in this photo, I’m talking about that using fabulous resources developed by Tracy Holmes in her Breakthrough Colour program. These have been quite revolutionary! A highlight of this visit for all of us was when the travellers from the fabulous WEW trip came for a polymer lesson. We did loads of preparation and there were many rehearsals and lots of planning and I was so so proud of the women. And, what’s more important, is that they were so proud of themselves! They guided a group of women, most of whom had never touched polymer clay before, in making a themselves a wonderful pair of earrings. Everybody loved the class and the joyful, dance filled picnic we all had together the next day! We’ll be doing a lesson again for travellers on the trip I am leading in November. This necklace was special and there was only one sample! This was one of three necklaces totally designed by the women and based on their own inspiration. A humble (but fabulous!) red bean. I am still in disbelief that the name of this bean appears to be, simply, ….bean! Surely it should be Nepali version of Ruby Treasure or Blood Lust Bean or SOMETHING a bit more exotic that…bean. Even Lazy Housewife is at least more interesting! If dreadfully sexist. It was a really interesting teaching moment, because one version we could have sold several times. The two remaining didn’t evoke any interest and there was a really interesting discussion when the travellers left as to why that may have been. It also led to the women re-designing the remaining necklaces with a GORGEOUS result which was snapped up in seconds by an enthusiastic local buyer. We’d rented out our place in Australia and had been in Nepal for 6 months when visa issues meant we suddenly had to return to Australia, leaving our Nepal life packed into 6 suitcases! Then I got ill and the prospect of returning to Nepal looked unlikely. Years of planning seemed pointless and I realised I basically had no control over my circumstances. Maybe I am a very thick student. Now I remind myself every day that everything ends and that change is inevitable. I know how precious this shot at life is. I remind myself that, while I can’t control the circumstances of my life, I can try to control how I respond to them. And training my mind helps with that! Recently I have been revisiting the 59 slogans for Training the Mind. These are also called the Lojong slogans and while these are from Buddhist writings, they are (like a lot of Buddhist teaching) very accessible to non Buddhists. For me, they are a way to take the benefits of mindfulness meditation from the cushion into my daily life. Over the years since, I remembered some very well and come back to them again and again, but I’d forgotten a lot of them and wanted to review them with a commentary by Norman Fischer, a Zen Buddhist. People often come to places like Nepal seeking enlightenment…or being awake to what is in each moment. What the slogans emphasise is that it is the gritty (often mundane) stuff of life anywhere that is the path to being awake. And that being awake is a moment by moment thing. Now, when something unexpected, unplanned or unhoped for happens, I think I remember sooner that it’s another chance to see what’s happening for what it is. I hope that by practising with the small things, I’ll be better at doing it with the big stuff. Again. I’m keen to provide a space where people also learn different ways to use techniques so they can create something that is uniquely them. Being able to be a bit flexible, provide lots of one-on-one and give people some freedom to explore can only really happen in smaller groups which is one reason I love working in semi-private groups. In this photo, Kopila and I are buying naphthalene balls from a gorgeous Tibetan woman. Well Kopila is negotiating the price and I am trying not to ogle the woman’s magnificent necklace of turquoise, amber and coral. I’m also recalling the practise of wearing a washer on your head. This is not uncommon for women of a certain age in Dharan. Sometimes exactly the right word doesn’t exist (This goes both ways!). The kindest way to describe my Nepali would be that it’s basic and enthusiastic. Sometimes wildly inaccurate but nearly always good for a laugh. We’ve managed to come up with suitable Nepali words for some things and use the English for others. The women are excited to be discovering a new range of tools and can see how this will help them make intentional choices. The earrings they made here were to explore analogous colour combinations and the design element of pattern. They made strips of different patterns using Pan Pastels and white clay and then decided how to arrange them to create a pleasing and cohesive whole. We also explored shape, size and value contrasts with achromatic and monochromatic colour schemes. Some of you will recall doing something similar in Canberra classes! Daaka designs can be very intricate and often vary from region to region. White is very prized) and we explored the impact of this in colour mixing exercises. Again, the women are working on their own designs, taking into account the complexity fo the fabric design. It starts with boring old white clay* and pastels. Then I use a combination of techniques like silk screening and texturing and scratching back surfaces and distorting and layering, layering, layering. My goal is to recreate the colours and textures of each leaf. I may not always get it exactly the same, but it’s the vibe of the thing! It has been a challenge for me to just keep creating these veneers and ignore the voice telling me to MAKE something from them! Quite possibly, I will eventually make something but I want to discipline myself to explore without that pressure of productivity. Nor am I a detailed note kinda girl. It’s more that I record (loosely!) my observations about what happens when and seeing if it applies in various contexts. I try to stay light and curious and exploratory. What happens when I make this the base colour and press this tool on top of it then silk screen over that? What happens when I impress the whole thing with a coarse fabric and dust a deeper coloured pastel on top? What happens when I run ALL this through the pasta machine at a thinner thickness? Even if I sprayed them, the spores shrivel so the photos are not accurate and my recreations are of the spores in the state they were when I collected them.Surprisingly bright!! It was an EXCELLENT time, great to get back to the desert, wonderful to catch up with darling friends (hello Deb!!) and a bit of a turning point for me creatively. Maybe it’s part of the reason why I’m collecting pink leaves again. I suspect pink leaf collecting means I’m feeling connected. Grounded in a good way. Most mornings I walk down to the mighty Murray River. Sometimes I head north east into Victoria (sounds fun saying I walked interstate) passing the community gardens where I say Namaste to the Bhutanese refugees who may be working there. Other times I head west along to some fabulous wetlands. And whatever the direction I listen to the glorious sounds of the birds and watch for them darting in the gums. Occasionally, I wonder if I am the only person in Albury who has an action plan for what to do if there is an earthquake while I am on the part of the walk that goes under the causeway. Clearly, if there was a big earthquake*, I’d probably be stuffed. But that hasn't stopped me working out what I’d do. We (Samunnat Inc in this case) have reopened our US shop, launched our utterly divine flower brooches, got our Zoom based Design lessons back on track and made travel plans. And doesn’t that feel weird!? Planning ahead like that? But, first things first. Our US shop was in resting mode while our darling Kathleen Dustin recovered from a very nasty bike accident. Like all of us of a certain age, Kathleen was frustrated with how much longer recovery takes when you are of a certain age. Bugger the certain age shite eh? Thrilled that she’s going well now. The flower brooches began their lives when Kathleen and I were in Nepal in March. The women learnt a wonderful new cane which incorporated scraps and then used it in a design that Kathleen helped them develop. Working out how to actually produce these in a consistent and cost effective way was transformed thanks to the generosity of Gill Scott (Clay Lady Down Under) who made and donated FABULOUS cutters exclusively based on our designs. Brooches were made, glitches were unglitched, hitches unhitched and, finally….the brooches are ready to sell. They really are magnificent and if you want to see more of the range, head here. The aim has been to help the women strengthen their design skills; to help them be able to understand better why some things work and some things don’t and to be able to independently and confidently make good design decisions. We’ve been working through the principles and elements of design…laboriously trying to translate these into Nepali where possible and explaining and experiencing them when a common language needed to be developed. Each lesson is shared, translated, turned into a Canva tutorial, translated and then the women create some work based on the particular principle. This had got a bit scatty due to the vicissitudes of life but we’re back on track now. After the lesson, the women spend some time making their own designs and we all meet again and talk about how the stuff they have learnt was applied and could be used more. We had, perhaps, left our run a bit late with advertising and post COVID travellers seem to need MUCH more notice. We didn’t have enough people able to travel in 2023 so it just wasn’t viable for my darling Bishnu to run. BUT….excitingly, the two trips for next year are almost full! Lovely Sarah Bartam has a full group going in March and I have only got one space left for November. AND we already have interest for 2025. So that’s super exciting. As a women who has had travel plans cancelled due to cancer and COVID I am well aware that THINGS HAPPEN but it is nice (albeit a bit weird) to make some longer term travel plans. These poems were all chosen because they help to deepen…engagement with this moment we have. I am all for anything that helps me to be more mindful, so each morning I read a poem before I start my journalling and meditation. So I’ve decided to do this again. This time the “rules” are as follows: Make a new colour using Cernit each day. ONLY use some or all of the following colours: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow**, White and/ or Black. One week of pure hues, one week of tints, one week of shades and one week of times. Then repeat! Colour names will reflect the recipe: C,M,Y,W,K More on the details later and I’m hoping that after a few months I’ll have some wonderful Cernit colour recipes. I’ll also have learnt a lot about working with Cernit which is newish to me! Watch this space folks! Those who are interested in the recipes can drop me a line. I can be a bit precious about a lot of things and this sometimes stuffs me up. I can be especially precious about time and materials and my efforts and all sorts of things and I realised that this preciousness really impacts on my capacity to explore and play. I decided I needed a little ritual to remind myself, every time I sat down in my studio, that while my time and materials etc ARE precious, so is experimentation and play and exploration! So now I try to remember to pause before I start and light some incense and say, OK you silly git, time is precious, materials are precious but so is play and exploration blah blah blah. Obviously I don’t speak like that to myself. I am kind and open and compassionate with myself at all times. Ha Ha! The actual words are evolving but it is the pause that’s important. just remembering that I don’t have to make something worthy of selling.
